No matter your case, it can be difficult to choose a lawyer. There are so many lawyers working in different fields of law and many seem to make huge promises to get you a settlement or win a case. While it may be tempting to choose the most confident or bold lawyer, it is a smart idea to take the time to research different legal teams and law firms. By comparing different lawyers and meeting for preliminary chats, you can find an experienced lawyer who can work with you to solve your case.
Do They Listen to You? A good lawyer should not talk over you during your meetings. A lawyer with experience ought to listen to your issues and understand your point of view. This does not mean that the lawyer will not contradict you at times, but rather that you feel like you both understand each other. An experienced lawyer knows when to talk and when to listen. Are They Transparent? A good lawyer should not hide any fees or payment plans from their clients. It is a good idea to ask potential legal teams how much they think your case may cost. An experienced lawyer should be able to give you an idea of how many hours they expect to spend working on your case, as well as how much their rate could be. Honesty is an excellent trait in a lawyer, so trust your gut as to whether or not the lawyer is open with you or hiding something. Can They Answer Your Questions? A good lawyer should not change the subject when you ask your questions. Objectivity and clarity are good signs that a lawyer has experience. Some lawyers may try to sugarcoat your options in order to gain your business, so keep an eye out for overly optimistic statements or bragging. Good lawyers know how to weigh the risks and rewards of legal battles as well as explain legal concepts to clients.
